Give your unused basketball shoes a second, most useful life! We are collecting gently worn athletic shoes of all sizes and shipping them to some very grateful young student athletes who are participants in the Warlords Basketball Foundation in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Warlords Basketball Foundation conducts a series of academic and athletic camps for young Africans, aimed at giving them a chance to earn an education in the U.S. See this FB page for more info.
One Warlords alum is Sunday Okeke, now a senior at Greens Farms Academy in Westport, where he was named an All New England Prep School player last year. Sunday’s first-ever pair of basketball shoes were given to him by the Warlords foundation.
Sunday, a 6’8’’ power forward and dedicated scholar athlete, plans to use his athletic skills to help him pursue his goal of earning a college degree in the U.S. and eventually returning to Nigeria to help improve lives in his homeland.
“I want to be a psychologist,” Okeke told Westport News reporter Ryan Lacey last year. “I want to help people. I’ve seen people go through a lot and would love to help them, share my story and show them they can do anything in the future.”
Drop off your donated basketball shoes by Sept. 15 at 73 Valley Road in Westport (off Greens Farms Road, corner of Valley and Hale St.). Simply place them on the front porch and they will soon be on their way. (A donation to help with shipping costs is also appreciated.) Questions? Call Scott Smith at 203-505-9897. Thank you!
